Hill House Notation

2002

Avocado Courtyard Wall_In the courtyard a notational intervention appears, a stacked horizontal bands of concrete relief. These are the elevations of the curved concrete shell, flattened and compressed, then layered one atop another like geological strata or pages in a book. Each horizontal band traces the profile of the home's flowing curves, creating a rhythm of arcs that shift subtly from layer to layer. Together they compose a vertical reading of what the house looks like from one side, unwrapped and layered into poetic, accumulated slices of its own.

Sine Disc_Ascending the concrete staircase toward the roof-top garden roof, the Sine Disc emerges as a circular relief impressed into the vertical wall, a plan view of the house frozen-solo in concrete. The carved geometry that defines the home's interior is captured here as a notational artifact, a two-dimensional drawing made tactile and elemental. The sine-wave carved circles nest within one another, creating a relief that reads as both architectural diagram and archaeological imprint. A fossil record of the house's formal DNA pressed into its own skin.

Sine Sconce_Another Sine disk sconce operates as a light fixture signifying a back entrance to the home. The same parti diagram, but flat’ish, floating, and glowing from behind.
